2.8mm - 4.0mm Furniture Compression Springs , 4" Black Furniture Coil Springs For Seat
Design of springs is important
Care needs to be taken when designing a spring for a particular application. As you don’t want it to be too hard to compress, as conversely, you wouldn’t want it to be too forgiving. Typically, the number of coils and or the wire diameter determines the strength of the spring in practical terms, but too many coils will hamper the function of it, and not allow ‘even’ compression. Too few coils and the spring will be in danger of completely collapsing and not returning to its original position on return.
Product Description & Application
The “double coil” spring has a larger open coil at each end. They are sold by Tons, but you also can buy the number as you require. They are available in different heights and firmness.
They must be fastened to a webbed, wood or metal strap seat foundation. Next, they are anchored to the frame.
This is done by tying them to the desired height and firmness using spring twine. Sometimes this is referred to as “8-way hand tied”. This is the best way, but not all tying follows this method.
Coil springs are more common in older furniture. They are used today in higher end furniture. They range in height from 4 (11 gauge) to 14 (8 gauge) inches. The heavier gauge springs - 9-11 - are used in seats. Each size can be obtained in 3 different grades of firmness - hard, medium and soft. The height of the spring is dependent on the style of the seat.
Fixing
The method of fixing furniture compression springs in place is the top and bottom coils are sewn into position or fixed across webbing (on furniture applications). Stability of the top and bottom of the spring is imperative, as without secure fixing the spring will become unstable and topple over from one end or the other and render its use inoperable.
